Chocolate is a very versatile garnish and even if your dessert hasn’t any chocolate in it you can add a few drops of chocolate ganache or a chocolate curl and your plate will shine.  Chopping a high grade chocolate and sprinkling it on that white cupcake will make a statement.  Or making chocolate curls to add a touch to a fruit tart is any easy step to take that ordinary tart to the next level.  Melting chocolate and dipping dried fruit or nuts is easy enough to garnish your next dessert.  Lining a sheet pan and making a free form of chocolate can then be leaned or pushed into the top of your next custard or cheesecake.

Fruit is another wonderful color accent you can use on most desserts to make you look like and expert pastry arts baker.  Fanning a strawberry to place on your dessert plate or on top of a cupcake is demonstrated beautifully on the TLC web site (http://recipes.howstuffworks.com/tools-and-techniques/how-to-garnish-cooking.htm)

Taking the seeds from a pomegranate and spreading them on your plate can make a very dramatic effect.  Grating the peel of a lemon, lime or even orange will dress up any plate.  Beautifully colored fruits such as kiwi or blood oranges can be cut and placed on your plate to be presented like the inner pastry art baker you can be.  Try slicing a star fruit to add shape to the plate or cutting an orange or lemon into the shape of a butterfly.

Sugaring fruits is a simple method every pastry art baker knows to add sparkle to your dessert plate.  You must use whole uncut fruit such as cherries, blueberries or grapes, since the juices from cut fruit will dissolve the sugar.  Using a very fine sugar available at most cake decorating stores, first paint the fruit using a small paint brush with egg white then gently roll in the sugar.  Let the fruit dry overnight before using it as a garnish.

Anyone can look like a professional pastry art baker just by taking the time to present your baked goods with beautiful and colorful garnishes.
